Ambien (zolpidem) is a sedative-hypnotic medication specifically designed for the short-term management of insomnia, working by enhancing the activity of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter that quietens neuronal activity in the brain. Its primary benefit is its rapid onset—often taking effect within 30 minutes—which significantly reduces “sleep latency,” or the time it takes to fall asleep, without the prolonged “hangover” effect associated with older sedatives.
However, Ambien is distinct for its unique and sometimes hazardous side effects, most notably complex sleep behaviors.
